Severe damage has been caused by the earthquake, which resulted in many people seeking shelter in temporary camps. The mayor of Amatrice said “Amatrice is not here anymore, half of the town is destroyed.”, which may indicate the scope of devastation. The large scale of destruction has raised concerns over the implementation of anti-seismic law (1974). It has been noted that not all new  and renewed buildings comply with these regulations, and thus are susceptible to damage in case of earthquake.

It is believed that, in future, systems such as  the SECTOR platform is will improve the first responders actions. In case of the aforementioned earthquake, the first responders had to wait for satellite images of the area of interest. The SECTOR platform would largely facilitate such process since such images would be provided thanks to map services. Additionally, the common information platform will incorporate past events databases. Therefore, emergency services will be able to take necessary countermeasures using the past experiences.
